Writing a good description Writing a good item description can be a very difficult thing to do. This is because there are many different factors involved in writing one such as length, complexity of words, accurately describing the item, telling bidders about any problems with the item and whether to use symbols and abbreviations. Before we start let us look at the following auction listing example and then explore ways to correct it and make it more appealing- @@@@@WICKED COMPUTER@@@@@ A really cool computer with lots of memory, hard drive space and a wicked processor. Around 2 years old and I don't think it has anything wrong with it. Also comes with some extras. Not sure what operating system! Doesn't include monitor! DON'T DELAY! BID TODAY!!!!!!!! @@@@@WICKED COMPUTER@@@@@ Right, now that we have that out of the way let us look at ways to improve it and maximize your profits. The first thing you will probably notice is the strange title that goes '@@@@WICKED COMPUTER@@@@'. Now you're probably thinking that it is eye catching and appealing but in reality it looks sloppy and unprofessional. These kinds of auction titles and keywords are very off-putting for many people, as word has already been passed around in many online auction books and websites as being one of the things you should should never do in your listing. A much better alternative would have been something like ' Excellent Computer' or 'Good Quality PC'. Also remember that using symbols such as !,$,%,^,# etc. is a bad idea. Now that we have the title sorted out we move on to the second problem with the above listing - the fact that it does not describe the item (in this case a computer) very well. It always pays to be specific with what you are selling and provide as much information as possible. The condition of the item has not been described either and when the writer simply states 'I don't think there is anything wrong with it' then that puts many possible bidders off. The condition of the item must always be fully described including any scratches or discolouration the item has experienced, what problems you have experienced with it in the past and whether the item has been repaired or upgraded/tampered with. Ensure all minor imperfections (as well as major ones) are noted in the listing too. Be specific about what parts the item contains and what extras are included. Something along these lines should have been written - Excellent quality computer with 256mb of RAM, a 128mb graphics card, a 2.4ghz processor, a, 80gb hard drive and a DVD reader and CD burner. Uses Windows XP and is around 2 years old. Included also is the computer manual, recovery disk and cables. This computer has a few light scratches from day-to-day use but nothing major. Please note that it does not include a monitor! Questions are welcomed. Thanks for your interest. To recap-
